The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a wonderfully entertaining movie that introduces a group of retired seniors finding somewhere congenial for their retirement. The story shows retired people in a wonderfully human light that will appeal to everyone. The amazing Sonny (Dev Patel) (Slumdog Millionaire) appears as a panic stricken hotel manager trying to cope. The elderly end up in Jaipur in their worst nightmare but they cope while regarding England as an almost foreign land. The guests, except for Maggie who will not eat anything she cannot pronounce all venture out exploring the town and surrounding attractions. The interactions of the guests are fun to watch and the development between Evelyn and Douglas is delightful. The story is about the elderly growing old disgracefully while enjoying themselves and coping with their new lives. Adapted from Deborah Moggach’s novel ‘These Foolish Things’, the wonderful screenplay gives the magnificent British cast opportunities for excellence. Penelope Wilton as Bill Nighy’s Wife constantly belittles her husband and tells him, “When I want your opinion, I’ll give it to you.”
